Wasaga Beach, renowned for its 14-kilometre stretch of the world’s longest freshwater beach, is embarking on a transformative journey to become a premier, year-round tourist destination. The Ontario government has pledged nearly $38 million to rejuvenate the town’s tourism sector, aiming to bolster the local economy and create new opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

Destination Wasaga: A Vision for the Future

  • $25 million dedicated to restoring the historic Nancy Island site, a significant landmark from the War of 1812.
  • Nearly $11 million allocated for upgrading roadways and infrastructure to support both tourism and a planned 3,000-home development.
  • $2 million set aside for downtown redevelopment, focusing on enhancing the town’s core to attract visitors year-round.

Premier Ford emphasized the importance of this investment, stating that it will “protect Ontario jobs, boost local tourism, and support long-term growth.”

A New Era with Marriott

Complementing the provincial investment, the Sunray Group has announced plans to construct a premium Marriott hotel at Beach Area 1. This $45 million project will feature:

  • Approximately 120 rooms.
  • A high-quality restaurant and commercial shops.
  • Convention and wedding facilities.
  • Wellness amenities, including a spa and fitness area.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2026, with the hotel aiming to attract multi-day visitors and elevate Wasaga Beach’s profile as a luxury destination.

Revitalizing the Beachfront

The town has already commenced the transformation of its iconic Beach Area 1. Demolition of outdated structures, such as the former Funnel Tunnel, Shore Store, and Bananas Beach Bar, is underway to make room for modern developments. The revitalization plan includes mixed-use residential and commercial spaces, inspired by successful models like the Village at Blue Mountain.

Mayor Brian Smith expressed enthusiasm about the changes, noting that the redevelopment will “support our small businesses” and “cement the town’s position as a spectacular Canadian destination.”

Looking Ahead

With these significant investments and developments, Wasaga Beach is poised to redefine itself from a seasonal hotspot to a vibrant, year-round destination. The combination of historical preservation, infrastructure upgrades, and luxury accommodations promises a bright future for the town and its residents.
