Campers Rescued, Flood Damage Under Assessment
A severe thunderstorm ripped through Algonquin Provincial Park over the weekend of June 22–23, 2025, causing widespread damage, flash flooding, and triggering multiple search and rescue operations. The intense weather event affected not only park infrastructure but also the safety of hundreds of campers and backcountry visitors.
Flash Floods Strand Hundreds of Campers
Torrential rain led to flash flooding that quickly overwhelmed parts of Algonquin Park, including campgrounds and canoe routes. According to reports, hundreds of campers were stranded deep within the backcountry as rising water levels made trails, portages, and waterways impassable. Ontario Parks officials and emergency responders had to assess conditions quickly and coordinate with local services to reach those in need.
Dramatic Rescue Operations
The Ontario Provincial Police Emergency Response Team (OPP ERT), Ontario Parks staff, paramedics, and helicopter crews were involved in several dramatic rescues throughout the storm. In one incident, two campers were rescued from the park after being caught in severe weather near the east end of the park late Saturday night. Another high-profile rescue involved a mother and her teenage son; the mother suffered serious injuries and was airlifted from a remote area thanks to joint emergency services.
One Camper Seriously Injured
Injuries from the storm were not limited to minor cuts or bruises. At least one camper suffered significant injuries during the height of the storm and was airlifted out of the park in serious condition. First responders praised the injured woman’s teenage son for staying calm and helping to facilitate her rescue. This incident underscores the importance of backcountry preparedness and access to emergency communication tools.
Park Officials Assessing Damage
Ontario Parks is currently assessing the extent of the damage within Algonquin Park. Flooded trails, downed trees, and damaged campsites are expected to require significant clean-up and repairs. Updates on trail closures, access restrictions, and repair timelines will be shared through official channels in the coming days.
A Wake-Up Call for Campers
This storm serves as a powerful reminder of how quickly conditions can change in the backcountry. Campers are urged to:
- Always check weather forecasts before entering the park
- Be equipped with emergency gear and communication devices
- Register trip plans with park authorities
- Stay alert to changing weather conditions
