Max the Moose
Dryden’s Towering Roadside Icon
If you’re travelling along the Trans-Canada Highway through Northwestern Ontario, make sure to pull over in Dryden to meet one of the region’s most beloved residents—Max the Moose. Standing proudly at over 18 feet tall and weighing in at nearly 9 tons, Max is a towering symbol of the rugged Canadian wilderness and the community spirit that defines Dryden.
Erected in 1962, Max was originally built to promote tourism in the area and has since become a cherished local landmark. Crafted from concrete and steel, this giant moose has watched over the city for decades, greeting visitors and serving as a must-stop photo opportunity. He’s more than just a roadside attraction—Max represents the outdoor lifestyle that Dryden is known for, from hunting and fishing to camping and hiking in the surrounding boreal forests.
Max the Moose is located at the Tourist Information Centre on Highway 17, making it a convenient and worthwhile pit stop for road-trippers heading east or west. There’s ample parking, picnic tables, and clean restrooms nearby, making it a great place to stretch your legs and snap some fun family photos. In the summer, you’ll often find travellers gathering around Max, comparing photos and sharing stories of their journey across Northern Ontario.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning fan, Max is a nostalgic and fun reminder of the quirky charm that makes Canada’s small towns so memorable. Kids love him, adults admire him, and everyone agrees—no trip through Dryden is complete without saying hello to Max the Moose.
